Spring must be here, because the yearly plant extravaganza is back at the Green and Gold Garden at the University of Alberta’s south campus. Get a coffee before you go, and wear your softest jeans, just to add to the pleasure of the experience.
The sale is on Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Poultry Research Centre (one block north of the Green and Gold Garden, on 118th St – the first building on your right when you turn right off 60 Avenue on to 118 Street).
There are lots of plants to choose from, including many varieties of tomatoes, a few varieties of peppers, herbs (parsley, oregano and thyme), plus other vegetables (kale, Swiss chard, eggplant and tomatillos), and flowers. All plants are priced at $4 each. It’s cash only, and don’t forget to bring a box to carry your plants home.
There will also be handicrafts for sale, created by the women of Tubahumurize Association. The group, based in Rwanda, helps for socioeconomically marginalized women receive counselling, vocational training, health education and micro-credit loans that allow them to start small businesses and support their families. All profits from the Green and Gold Garden go to support Tubahumurize.
If you’d like to volunteer to work in the garden, organizers are always looking for extra help. You can email gggarden@ualberta.ca or call 780-492-4087.
Also, Tubahumurize has just launched its first crowd-funding campaign to build a women’s shelter in Rwanda, where there are no shelters for women escaping domestic abuse.
